My teaching philosophy reflects my commitment to making sociology accessible, rigorous, and relevant for all students, including those who enter higher education through nontraditional pathways and are historically underrepresented.
I design my courses with flexibility, inclusivity, and applied relevance so that students balancing professional, family, and academic responsibilities can thrive. My experience spans both large lecture and specialized courses, while I teach both in-person and online.
I have received two teaching awards recognizing my commitment to pedagogy: the Paul Medows Excellence in Teaching Award at SUNY at Albany and the SAGE Publishing Keith Roberts Teaching Innovations Award by the Section on Teaching and Learning at the American Sociological Association.
from ASOC115 Introduction to Sociology:
"Amazing professor, she is very knowledgeable and passionate about sociology, and you can tell by how she teaches. Exams and assignments are very fair. Can speak very highly of her."
"Very engaging, has students play games/engage in discussions that add an extra layer to some of the simpler concepts. Responds well to students and makes time for everyone despite the size of the lecture."
"Thought-provoking and eye-opening content, a course everyone should take. Led class informatively and at a good pace each week. She is knowledgeable in her field, allowing other coworkers to share their research and making all the slides available for review. Quizzes and class participation were both fair, and I found this course understandable and valuable to my college career. A good professor whom I would consider retaking."
from ASOC210 Sociology of Culture:
"Phenomenal instructor and very excellent course."
"Being that this was an 8-week course, we met twice a week for 3 hours. As boring as that sounds, Professor Wang kept me motivated and captivated in the course. Her use of group work and asking thought-provoking questions really helped keep the energy up during class. She also uses excellent articles that we can relate to and shows us current events that actually affect us. I have learned so much in this class, and she is truly one of the best Sociology professors I have had. She is a dedicated teacher and clearly loves what she does; it's not just lecturing, she speaks to us, and we respond. Truly an amazing teacher, I hope she sees this as well! :) "
